Ancient Roman Legionary Horse Brooch // 1st-3rd Century
Product Description
An Ancient Roman legionary horse brooch, c. 1st–3rd century AD. A beautiful and rare bronze plate brooch of a grazing horse, worn by high-ranking figures in the Roman Legion. The animal is modeled in the half-round with a looped tail, the back with a pin-catch plate (the original iron pin lost to history). Good condition. For comparable brooches, see Richard Hattatt (2000), “A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattatt's Ancient Brooches,” Oxbow Books, p. 359 for type. Measures 1 3/8” L, with lovely deep olive-green patina. Provenance: From the private collection of a South London art professional; previously in a collection formed on the UK/European art market in the 1980s.
