British East India Company Era Pistol // circa 1810-1840
Product Description
An excellent and quite burly percussion pistol made circa 1810-1840. A classic East India Company era flintlock pistol, converted to percussion. Originally manufactured around 1715, the British Sea Service pistol remained in use until the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. Of characteristic form with hardwood stock and brass furniture, the lock converted to percussion and engraved lock with rampant lion above twisted rope holding a crown. Original “captive” ramrod still present! The lanyard loop at the base of the grip was intended so sailors could string two pistols on a sash around their necks and have a chance at firing 2 good shots upon swinging upon an enemy vessel. Overall length 15 1/2". Ex Orange County, CA collection.
