Civil War Battlefield-Recovered US Belt Plate // c. 1861-1865
Product Description
A Civil War battlefield-recovered belt plate, c. 1861–1865. An excellent arrowback US oval belt plate. Remarkably well-preserved, but it appears the solder was struck with something heavy and with great force, which indented and nearly inverted this belt plate—possibly saving the soldier’s life. Presumably, this is when his gear was lost and trampled in the thick of battle. Waist plates were mounted on heavy leather belts that a soldier wore outside of the jacket to hold the cartridge box, cap box, and other accoutrements. Manufacture of the US oval ended in 1865. The belt plate measures 3 1/2” in length, with rusty/copper tone and earthen deposits. Ex Heritage Auctions, Texas.
