Product Description

An American Civil War group of five excavated bullets, 1861–1865, recovered from a battlefield hospital site. Three of the lead bullets are deeply impressed with teeth marks—evidence of being bitten by wounded soldiers during surgery or amputation. This practice gave rise to the phrase “bite the bullet.” The group also includes a rare .58 caliber “cleaner” bullet and a .58 caliber Minié ball. Sizes range from approximately 7/8" to 1" in length.
