Pre-Columbian Michoacán Fragment // c. 200 BC Mexico

Pre-Columbian. Michoacán, ancient Mexico. Archaic Period c. 200 BC. A fine ceramic female head from a figurine, of the classic ”Double Eye" type. She is depicted with expressive features, wide eyes and mouth, and large headdress. Old collection tag on back. This was a fertility-type figurine, found near Lake Patzcuaro, Mexico in the 1950's to early 1960's. Originally depicting a pregnant woman, these figures were planted with the seed corn as a votive offering to the goddess of agriculture. Figurine measures 1.5"W x 1.25"H. Mounted in easy-to-open magnetic archival frame (frame measures 4” x 4”). Provenance: Ex. Lorenz Borenstein, New Orleans, collected in the 1950’s. Mr. Borenstein ran a gallery in the French Quarter of New Orleans during this period. With its original certificate of authenticity, bearing a drawing of the fragment done by Borenstein in 1963!Accompanied by a hand-signed certificate of authenticity which includes all the details, culture, dating, motifs/inscriptions when applicable, historical relevance, and provenance.
