This pair of notes is known as the Late Finish Face Plate 307 Changeover Pair. The changeover occurs when the back and front plates are not from the same series.
Printing plates are used until they can no longer print in detail, then they are destroyed. In some cases the plates will “crossover” in to another series, which is sort of the case here. The “307” plate was meant for production for a different series.
The first note in this lovely changeover pair is the usual $5 North Africa note. The second note is an unusual $5 North Africa which has the late finish face plate of 307.
Work on face plate 307 was started on April 6, 1936. Then the plate was stored in the plate vault until its "discovery" in 1942. The plate was finished on July 3, 1942, and it was then put to use from July 9, 1942 to June 3, 1943.
This means that face plate 307 has a macro size plate number, but plate number 307 comes from the micro size plate number range. This was the result of BEP economy measures during World War II.
Known as a "yellow seal" Silver Certificate, this historic World War II note is now highly prized by collectors. These special Series 1934A $5 notes were only printed and released ONCE. Issued for Operations Torch and Huskey, the Allied invasions of North Africa and Sicily during World War II. The currency could be rendered useless if captured by the enemy.
The notes are encased and sealed by PMG. Every PMG certified note is backed by the industry leading PMG guarantee, which provides greater protection for both BUYERS AND SELLERS.
